Two major Sierra Nevada peaks in one day! Access from the ski centre near Granada. We use chairlifts to get into the high cold air above 2900m. Then its glorious high level walking on magnificent mountain trails. Veleta (3498m) and Cerro de los Machos offer stunning views over the whole range of the Sierra Nevada. Then its down some old snow slopes to the beautiful lakes at Lagunillas. Loads of old snow remaining here (about 5m+ depth!). A gentle descent through the ski pistes brings us back. 5 hour trip. Day trip to ascend highest peak in Spain, Mulhacen 28th July

1 day - to and from the Hoya de Portillo. About 8-9 hours of walking is involved (1300m ascent), ascending by the long south ridge and descending via the west flank.

Start at the Sierra Nevada ski centre and take in Cerro de los Machos, the northern slopes to Juegos de Bolos and Puntal de la Caldera to stay overnight at the Laguna de Caldera. Next day, back over to Veleta, traverse Tajos de la Virgen ridge to the Elorietta hut. Back then next day or the next to Lanjaron via Tajos de los Machos ridge or the route over via the Cerro de Caballo and Pico del Cartujo.
